From plane to train at Schiphol Airport

The underground train terminal is located near Schiphol Plaza (the Dutch railway company is known as NS) on Schiphol airport. It is within few minutes walking from the baggage claim, in the same terminal building. Fellow illuminated signs “To the trains” will guide you.

It is important to purchase a train ticket to Groningen before you board the train. You can buy either a first-class ticket (€ 50,40) or  a second-classticket (€ 29,70). Passengers travelling without valid ticket will be fined.

At Schiphol there are two ways to purchase railway tickets: at the ticket office from a railway officer in person, or at the yellow ticket vending machines that you will find at the luggage claim area and at the entrances of the train terminal. The machines take foreign debit cards containing the maestro logo.

At http://www.ns.nl (Click on ‘English’) you find not only information about train departures and arrivals, but also a demonstration of the ticket vending machine with touch screen. This gives you an opportunity to practice.

Make sure that you board one of the train carriages marked with the destination Groningen outside, because the other part of the train goes another city (Leeuwarden). On weekdays, the first train departs at 6.19 a.m. and the last train at 11.19 p.m. On Sundays, the first train departs at 7.14 a.m. and the last train at 10.19 p.m.
Please be aware that you may not find food or drinks inside the train
